When you look in the mirror, your nose is the first thing you see. When you don't like what you see, you may lose confidence and spirit, because perception is reality. Whether you like it or not, people are often judged by the size and shape of their nose. Over a period of time, this can significantly lower your self-esteem and make you feel self conscious.

Rhinoplasty is a popular procedure for our Bloomington, Peoria, and Champaign patients, such as this 25-year-old woman. When she came in for her initial consultation, she told Dr. G.D. Castillo that she disliked 2 aspects of her nose: the wide nasal tip and the hump in the dorsal area. The patien... View Case

Often times a nose is not proportionate to the face. A small bump or bulbous tip can dramatically affect an otherwise well balanced, attractive face. For our patients from Central Illinois, including Champaign, rhinoplasty is usually performed to:

  • Correct nasal humps
  • Refine a bulbous tip
  • Change the width or length of the nose
  • Even out the height of the nose
  • Repair nasal injuries

In addition, many patients seek nose surgery because of obstructions inside of the nose that impair breathing, cause headaches or lead to frequent sinus infections.

In years past, you could find a multitude of bad nose jobs. Today, that is not the case, providing you have done your homework when searching for the right surgeon. Over the past several years, technical advancements have allowed a more natural, proportionate, consistent result. This provides patients with much more pleasing outcomes than were possible 25 years ago. During your consultation, you will have a chance to view rhinoplasty photos to get an idea of the types of results that can be achieved through nose surgery. Computer imaging is also available to help you visualize how your nose would look after surgery.

Dr. Castillo's Difference

As a rhinoplasty specialist in Illinois, Dr. Castillo finds cosmetic nose surgery to be the most personally rewarding procedure he performs. It is the most challenging of all cosmetic procedures done today and is the true measure of a cosmetic surgeon's skill. It requires the artistic foresight to create a nose that will compliment the beautiful and complex shape of the face. Dr. Castillo uses an individual approach rather than a "cookie cutter" approach during nasal surgery. That includes understanding the difference between a feminine nose and the masculine nose that most men desire. Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequent cosmetic procedures performed at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic, serving Central Illinois including Champaign and Kankakee.

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty is performed in our operating suite in Savoy (Champaign - Urbana area) on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia. With few exceptions, the incisions are all made inside the nose so visible scarring is avoided. Each operation is different, but basically the procedure involves shifting or removal of bone and cartilage and is therefore primarily a modification of the framework of the nose. During the procedure, Dr. Castillo re-drapes the skin over the new nasal framework. Many patients will combine chin surgery or cheekbone enhancement with cosmetic nose surgery.

Rhinoplasty can be performed for both adults and teens, but in general it should be delayed until a patient's facial development is approaching maturity. This is usually around the age of 14 for girls and 15 for boys. When surgery is carried out to correct breathing problems or to correct deformity produced by injury, it is often advisable to proceed with the operation at an earlier age.

There is no upper age limit for nasal reconstruction. Patients in their sixties and seventies choose to have this operation with good results. We are now beginning to see more patients combine nasal reconstruction with other types of surgery for aging such as a face lift or corrective eyelid surgery.

After Surgery

Nasal breathing will be restricted for the first week after the procedure and then gradually improve. You will be instructed to begin applying Bacitracin ointment the day following surgery to loosen and remove crusting and dried blood inside the nose. Significant bleeding problems following surgery are very rare. Nose blowing should be avoided for the first week, and patients should be careful to sneeze through their mouths if they have to sneeze.

After the operation, a cast is placed over the nose that remains in place for a week. In most cases the nose is not packed. After removal of the cast, there may be some swelling and bruising, but by the end of the first week patients should find that most of the swelling has resolved. Although the major portion of the swelling resolves quickly, some very minimal swelling will last for a few months after the operation. However this minimal swelling will not be detected by others. In general, the appearance of the nose continues to improve for as long as a year after the operation.

After the removal of the dressings, the patient must be very careful that the nose is not injured until complete healing has taken place. The frames of glasses should not be allowed to rest on the bridge of the nose for three weeks. Contact lenses may be used two to three days following surgery.

You can expect significant improvement in the appearance and function of the nose after rhinoplasty. To learn more, request a consultation with Dr. Castillo or call our office nearest you. We look forward to helping you enhance your look through skilled cosmetic procedures.
