How Can A Consultation For Laser Hair Removal Benefit Me?

Monday, April 11th, 2022

What You Can Expect at Your Consultation for Laser Hair Reduction:

I think it’s important to keep in mind that having laser hair reduction is a real treatment. It’s not the same as walking into a salon, choosing your hair dye color and walking out with a new look all in one visit.  Anytime you are considering a laser treatment whether it is Laser Hair Reduction, a Photo-facial laser treatment, or laser resurfacing, I would recommend choosing a facility with a a board-certified cosmetic surgeon or facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon.  This is important because while complications are not common, they can happen.  You want to be sure that even with the smallest of complications, there is a specially trained provider available to treat you should a complication occur.

The Consultation:

Don’t underestimate the importance of a consultation.  Scheduling a consultation is the first step to smooth, hair-free skin and it is the key to a successful Laser Hair Reduction experience. Every so often an individual will inquire about Laser procedures who expresses their unhappiness with having to go through a consultation prior to scheduling their laser treatment. Let me just say that ALL reputable facilities will REQUIRE a consultation prior to your treatment. If you can walk in and have a laser hair reduction treatment, that is a big red flag.

You will meet with me, the skincare and laser specialist for G.D. Castillo, MD.  Your appointment will last about 45 minutes depending on the number of questions you have.

What Will We Talk About?

Roxanne, Skincare & Laser Specialist

We will begin by discussing your initial hair reduction goals.  I will ask you to show me the area(s) of hair you would like treated. I will ask some questions about your health history, lifestyle, sun habits and medications. I will ask you about any skin conditions, auto-immune disorders and whether you are prone to scarring. I will explain what Laser Hair Reduction is, how it works, how many treatments you should expect and who makes the best candidates. We will talk about the benefits, risks, other options to treat unwanted hair. We will discuss the steps you will need to do follow to prepare for your treatments and what to expect after each treatment.

Bring Your List of Questions:

You will have time to ask questions.  Don’t be shy, it’s important that you get all your questions answered because this is your chance to gather the information you will need to decide if Laser Hair Reduction is right for you.

Finally, you will receive a written quotation for the cost of the treatments and a reminder sheet containing general information on the procedure, expectations, pre & post care. If you decide you would like to move forward with treatment, you will be scheduled for a quick appointment (no charge) with Dr. Castillo to clear you for treatment.

If would like more information regarding the treatment options for unwanted body hair, please call the office to schedule your consultation!

New Exclusive & Informative Interview With Skincare & Laser Specialist, Roxanne – Question #2

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Question: What makes patients so loyal to Dr. Castillo’s  skin rejuvenation suite?

Roxanne: Dr. Castillo’s Skin Rejuvenation Suite at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center is a place of peace, pampering, privacy and professional, progressive treatment options.”

  • “As the Skincare and Laser Specialist there, I get truly excited at the opportunity to help patients reach their skin rejuvenation goals and I think that shows through to our patients. Helping people look and feel their best is energizing and that energy is contagious! We have interesting, appreciative patients from all walks of life and again that energy just creates an atmosphere people want to be a part of.
  • “Going to a surgical facility headed by a triple-board certified cosmetic plastic surgeon with a stellar reputation and more than 30 years experience with skin rejuvenation rather than going to a salon or spa gives our patients peace of mind.”
  • “I think the thing you will notice right away is our emphasis on patient education. I spend a great deal of time with each patient during a consultation to make sure that they have a clear understanding of the skin rejuvenation procedure(s) or products they are considering. I believe there is nothing more important during that time than making sure they understand all the facts so they can make an informed decision that is right for them. “
  • “Our focus in on quality, not quantity. It is important that our patients do not feel rushed through their experience in the skin rejuvenation suite and that they know what to expect each step of the way. Because we only offer the most proven-effective treatments, rather than every new fad that pops up, our patients see consistent results that they can count on. It allows our patients to recommend Dr. Castillo’s skin rejuvenation suite  at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center to their friends and family with confidence and assurance.”

The Cosmetic Surgery Decision and A Strong Support Network

Right now, as you’re reading the Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center blog, more people than you realize are contemplating some type of a cosmetic procedure or treatment.  According to survey results from the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), “…the number of procedures performed annually has risen 45 percent over the last two years…”  Direct article link is :  http://www.aafprs.org/media/stats_polls/m_stats.html

Cosmetic surgery in Champaign/Urbana is no longer reserved as the domain of the rich and famous – that perception is as outdated as bobby socks and saddle shoes.  Procedures such as breast augmentation, liposculpture and facial surgery are within the reach of the average citizen and have lost the “privileged-only” status of the past.  Now that cosmetic surgery and cosmetic treatments are readily available – the term “aging gracefully” has lost both significance and impact.  Yes, of course we all are “aging,” but “gracefully” is a relative term to both our lifestyles and society as a whole.

When you strip the aesthetic concept down to the bare bones, every person that showers, shaves or brushes their teeth is performing a cosmetic activity to both look and feel better.  Even individuals who hesitate to undergo a surgical procedure have no problem with teeth whitening, laser hair removal, hair coloring, microdermabrasion, medical-grade skin care, mineral cosmetics, etc. – all of which are performed for cosmetic purposes.

So, basically, I believe that rather than a true opposition to the cosmetic industry, it’s more about the level of investment that each of us (both physical and monetary) are personally willing to dedicate toward improving our appearance that may generate a biased attitude toward some cosmetic procedures.  Our society, as a whole, has changed drastically in its perception of cosmetic plastic surgery.

I distinctly remember several years ago when I decided to undergo a cosmetic procedure.  I have absolute trust and confidence in the skill of my surgeon (G. D. Castillo, MD, FACS, of course!), but I still found myself somewhat hesitant to share my decision with others.  Initially, I wondered “what would they say to me or about me to others?  Will they consider me vain or selfish for investing in myself?  Will they try to talk me out of it?”

It was win-win for me.  My husband understood that it was my decision and he was supportive and wonderful (as always)!  My children?  Well, it went from “really, Mom, you don’t need anything done,” to “you’re doing what?”  But both of my kids (teenagers) respected my wishes and were nonjudgmental about my decision.  My three sisters thought it was absolutely great; their excitement rivaled my own.  Of course my mother thinks I’m perfect but she respected my decision too.  I also chose to share my decision with a very few select friends and I’m happy to report that only one responded negatively.

Remember, a cosmetic surgical procedure may be elective medical care, but it is still the real thingSurgery with a capital “S.”  There is some post surgical discomfort, limited down time and several different stages of the recovery process before obtaining the end result.  While discomfort and inconvenience are minimized, it’s still not a magic pill for the patient.  A cosmetic procedure is a road to improvement and the pavement may have the occasional rough surface.  The cosmetic process requires dedication to the end result and a strong support network can help the post-surgical developments transition smoothly and avoid emotional valleys.

Let’s face it, following cosmetic surgery a person is more emotionally vulnerable than they are likely to have ever been before in regard to their appearance.  Naturally, a supportive network of family and friends can ease the transition from the first few hours of “Hmmm…what did I do?” to “Wow!  So glad I did!”

So, while the decision to pursue a cosmetic procedure is yours and yours alone, your support network can play a vital role in the experience itself.  If you are contemplating this investment in yourself, a few ideas that you may want to consider are:

1.  Initially restrict your confidence to your own personal inner circle.  These are the people who are most likely to respect your feelings and support your decision accordingly.

2.  When talking about the surgery, share your decision rather than asking for validation – you may be pleasantly surprised by just how supportive your personal network is.

3.  During recovery, let your cosmetic surgeon measure your progress…healing takes time and hourly mirror checks are counter productive.  Remember, the payoff has to be fantastic or people wouldn’t keep doing it.

4.  DO put yourself in a holding pattern for the amount of time your surgeon recommends (usually anywhere from 2 to 10 days depending on the procedure) – don’t make the mistake of having cosmetic surgery on Monday and still think you’re going to host that awesome Wednesday afternoon luncheon.

5.  Most importantly, be realistic.  Talk in depth with your plastic surgeon.  Put the time and trouble into having all your questions both asked and answered.

6.  Lastly, listen carefully and cooperate fully with your medical team for the best possible post-operative experience.  I know that at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, we care about our patients and are fully vested in you having the most positive experience possible.

After you’re fully recovered and are enjoying that new bounce in your step and all those “have you lost weight?” or “did you change your hair?” questions, don’t be surprised when that treasured member of your support network says to you – “Hey, I’d like to talk to you about a personal decision I’ve made…”

HAIR REDUCTION

What is laser hair reduction and how does it work?

Imagine never having to shave, wax, bleach or pluck again!  Feel relieved just thinking about it? Imagine the amount of time you could save and painful skin irritations that could be prevented with the simple flash of a light.  Imagine spending a week at the beach and being able to leave your razor at home; no embarrassing shaving bumps or rashes, no vacation time spent grooming or griping onto the edge of the waxing table in pain while paying someone to rip the waxing cloth away from skin.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery,  we utilize a very safe, effective technology called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) .  IPL uses highly controlled flashes of light that are selectively absorbed by hair follicles lying below the surface of the skin.  The light energy damages the hair follicle, which disrupts the follicles ability to produce hair.  More advanced systems such as ours, allow us to customize your treatment according to your skin type, hair type and body location.

Laser Hair reduction be used on any body part.  The most popular locations for women are the face, underarms, bikini area and legs.  The most popular locations for men are the back, neck, shoulders and upper arms.  This treatment can provide significant improvement for those who suffer with ingrown hairs (follicular barbi)

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on several variables such as your skin type, hair color, and the percentage of hair follicles that are in the Anagen stage (growing stage) at the time of treatment.   It’s important to understand that hair reduction is a process.  It is not a one-time treatment, though it can provide very satisfying results.  Not all hair follicles are producing hair at the same time.  There are three different cycles; Anagen (growing stage), Telogen (dormant stage) and Catagen (the stage in between Anagen and Telogen).  Only the hair follicles in the Anagen stage are disrupted by the hair reduction treatments. A very high number of follicles are in the Telogen stage where there is no hair present to treat.  Because of this growth cycle, it will require several treatments to assure that we are treating each Anagen hair growth cycle.   Depending on the body location, this typically means 6-12 treatments.

How often will I need a treatment?

This depends on the body part being treated.  Hair grows in different areas of the body in a stochastic (probable behavior) process. In general we would treat the face, underarms or bikini area once every 6 weeks.  The back, shoulders, upper arms once every 8-10 weeks, and the legs once every 12 -14 weeks.

Where are the treatments performed?

Hair reduction is performed in the privacy and comfort of our skin restoration and laser suite.

Does it hurt?

Most patients find this procedure to be easily tolerated.  Most patients describe the procedure as feeling prickly or like a quick rubber band snap.

What is recovery like?

Some patients experience a mild sunburn sensation for about an hour after the procedure.  Your skin may appear red, pink or mildly swollen for 48-72 hours.  You are able to return back to normal daily activities immediately following your procedure. Avoid hot water, steam and high aerobics until redness is gone and skin sensation is back to normal, typically 2-4 days.

How can I find out more information or discover if I am a good candidate for hair reduction?

Call our office at 217-359-7508 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Castillo or Roxanne.  During your consultation, it will be determined if you are a good candidate and we can answer any additional questions you may have at that time.
