Monthly Microdermabrasion Club

Tuesday, March 24th, 2020

Well…join the club! We are all aging every day!  But, how apparent your signs of aging become is up to you.  Coco Channel once said “Nature gives you the face you have at twenty, it’s up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.”  I think that pretty much sums it up! Taking care of your skin through preventative maintenance can make all the different in your appearance.

For most, the signs of aging appear far sooner than we think they will, or at least far sooner than we are prepared for! Preventative maintenance like regularly scheduled in-office microdermabrasion is one way to slow that process and diminish the signs of aging.  A few years back, Dr. Castillo created a Monthly Microdermabrasion Club for the patients at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center to assist them with effective and economical way to improve and maintain their skin.

The Monthly Microdermabrasion Club has maintained its popularity because it offers considerable value to our patients.  It’s not just that you save about 40%  on your microdermabrasion treatments or that you receive exclusive monthly club member specials or that you see more and more improvement with each treatment, which let’s face it, those are all big incentives, but there is more that joining our Monthly Microdermabrasion Club has to offer!

Rather than going to a salon or spa, you are choosing to seek care in a cosmetic plastic surgery and skin rejuvenation center with a stellar reputation and extensive and continuing medically-based education. You get access to decades of skincare knowledge and experience and get to take a little scheduled time out to practice self-care!  It’s rejuvenating for both your skin and your spirit!

In addition, I will re-evaluate your skin at each visit to make sure you are progressing as planned and can help you with any adjustments you might need to make with your at-home regimen. You have an open forum to ask me, your trained skincare specialist about how to best care for your skin every single month!  Maybe you just read about the latest greatest cream or treatment and you are wondering more about it. I truly get excited at the opportunity to help patients reach their skin rejuvenation goals.  It’s a partnership and together we can do great things!

So how does the Monthly Microdermabrasion Club Work?

You can enroll anytime between January and August of each year. You will pay a yearly club fee which is prorated to the month in which you begin.  All memberships expire on December 31st of each year. You receive one Medical Microdermabrasion treatment every month from the time you purchase your club membership until the end of the year.  As of January 2020, Dr. Castillo will also extend a new, exclusive promotion each month for club members only!

Whether you are seeking skin improvements for the first time or looking for avenues to extend the life a cosmetic procedure, our monthly microdermabrasion club can help lead you in the right direction.

Want To Know What To Expect During Your Comprehensive Microdermabrasion Consultation?

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

When you arrive to your consultation, you will be greeted by our patient coordinator and asked to fill out a brief form regarding your skin.  It will cover topics such as your skin type, current medications, allergies or sensitivities, past skin treatment history, and your current skincare regimen.

Then you will meet with me for a full skin evaluation. We will discuss your skincare concerns, current regimen and your goals.  We will then determine whether or not you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion.  Microdermabrasion is often a good choice for those with minimal to moderate aging changes, rough texture, lines, blotchy skin tones, or minimal acne scarring, for those who want improvements in the way their skin looks and feels but do not want a more invasive treatment or those who have a busy schedule that does not allow for down time, and for those want to maintain their skin after having a surgical and laser procedure.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  We want you to have all the information you need to make an educated decision. Once the evaluation is completed, if microdermabrasion is not an appropriate treatment option for you, other treatment alternatives may be recommended instead.

If it is determined that you are a good candidate for microdermabrasion, we will review the benefits, risks, expected out-come and contra-indications.  Should you decide to move forward, we will create a treatment plan. The plan will include the number of treatments anticipated and how far apart you should schedule each treatment.  You will also leave with a formal, written cost quotation.

We will also discuss your current at home skincare regimen, if you have one.  We will look at which ones will enhance your results and which ones we may want to discontinue.  Maximum results are obtained by consistently and simultaneously participating in an at-home medical grade skincare program.

What To Expect During Your Microdermabrasion Treatment:

Your appointment will last 35-45 minutes. We will begin by reviewing the condition of your skin, any changes since your consultation and your at-home skincare program if you have already begun one.

We will begin treatment by cleansing your face. I will then physically exfoliate your skin with the diamond-tome wand.  As we progress further into your treatment plan, we may increase the abrasiveness of the exfoliating tip as your skin dictates. This is followed by a glycolic application.  You can expect some light tingling for 1-2 minutes. Then we finally reach everyone’s favorite part…the soothing oxygen-nutrient facial mist!  The treatment ends with an application of Dr. Castillo’s premier line of medical grade skincare products and mini-facial massage. You will leave the office feeling relaxing, refreshing and ready to face the world!

Depending on your treatment plan, you are likely to schedule the first 3-6 treatments 2 weeks apart if this is your first experience with microdermabrasion.  Our maintenance or monthly club members are more likely to seek treatment every 4-6 weeks.

Working as a team is the best way to support your results.  I am available to answer questions, deliver information and education as it pertains to your goals. I will routinely review and evaluate your treatment plan and perform effective, thorough in-office treatments.  Keeping your regularly scheduled appointments, consistently following an at-home skincare product regimen and limiting unprotected sun exposure will assure that we are both investing in the same goal of obtaining the best outcome possible.

Does It Hurt?

The old saying “no pain, no gain” does NOT apply here.  There is no pain involved in Diamond -tip type microdermabrasion.  You can feel a slight tugging of the skin due to suction, with abrasiveness similar to a buff puff.  You can feel a light tingle during the glycolic application and just might fall asleep during the mini facial massage.

What To Expect After Your Microdermabrasion Treatment:

Click here to learn more about BOTOX® in Illinois.

There is no-downtime after microdermabrasion. You will immediately notice that your skin feels smoother and looks refreshed. You may experience slight flushing of the skin for 10-30 minutes post treatment. As we increase the level of abrasiveness in future appointments, it can occasionally result in small cat-like scratches that will resolve quickly. Microdermabrasion is a quantitative procedure.  This means you will see more results after each treatment.

You can apply make-up and carry-out all of your normal activities immediately following your treatment. Microdermabrasion, like any exfoliating treatment will make your skin more sun sensitive for a few weeks.  Be sure to apply the recommended medical-grade, broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily.

Look Younger With CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing:

Finding non-surgical ways to look younger isn’t exactly a novel idea, in fact it’s growing by leaps and bounds. Men, women, scientists and clinicians alike are seemingly on a constant search the latest answer to aging.I’m not sure I would put to much stock in most of the options being presented today but there are indeed a few good options for looking younger in situations when surgery is not necessary.

Although dermal filler may get all the media hype, I would say the biggest non-surgical development  came along over a decade ago and is holding strong as the front-runner for non-surgical facial rejuvenation.

“COMICRO-FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING”

I have performed well over 700 COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing procedures at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center in Champaign and have yet to have a patient who doesn’t walk away looking younger at their one week appointment and even younger yet at their 3 month appointment. It really is a tiny little bit of magic when it comes to looking younger fast.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is my favorite procedure to perform because I know I will put a smile back on my patient’s face when they look in the mirror and see a reflection looking back at them that they are happy with and can feel confident with. That makes what I do very rewarding on a personal and professional level.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment for:

•lines      •wrinkles               •blotchiness          •brown spots        •builds collagen

•acne scarring      •rough texture     •Aging skin           •dull, lifeless, sun damaged skin

You will notice more light reflectivity within a week after treatment which creates a softer, more radiant, youthful appearance. COMicro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing even continues to increase more collagen and elastin formation for up to year. That doesn’t mean that you lose results after one year, I’m saying that the treatment actually continues to produce more and more results for up to a year. Now that’s a treatment that keeps on giving!

The beauty of this treatment (sorry, no pun intended) is that BOTH the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (middle layer of skin) can be treated and affected at the same. The epidermis is where the damaged, color producing cells are located that are responsible for the unwanted appearance of brown spots and tone changes. The dermis is made of elastin and collagen which provides the skin with structure; in other words, they make up the skins pliability, strength, form… When sun exposure and natural aging compromise the dermis; collagen and elastin break down and those dreaded lines and wrinkles start to form.

CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is performed while you are awake in the privacy and comfort of Dr. Castillo’s state-of-the-art skincare and laser rejuvenation suite. It is available in two levels.  Level 1 is used for more superficial lines and brown spots while level 2 is a deeper, more extensive treatment used for those with more advanced signs of aging. Most patients are ready to re-apply cosmetics with in about four days after treatment. Some more aggressive treatments may take a few days longer.

If you are thinking about non-surgical facial or body rejuvenation for any of the above signs of aging, I would definitely recommend considering CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing. I think you will find that you get a great return on your investment!

Absolutely Everything You Need to Know About Our Popular Microdermabrasion Treatment

Thursday, January 16th, 2020

Microdermabrasion:

If you are feeling disenchanted with the texture and appearance of your skin, you might check with your local cosmetic plastic surgeon to see if they offer Microdermabrasion.  It can be a simple, even relaxing way to revitalize your complexion.

What is it?

Microdermabrasion is an in-office skin treatment that is used to treat sun-damaged skin, signs of aging, acne-prone skin, acne scarring, mild pigmentation, rough texture and lines. It increases circulation and exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smoother and looking brighter, much like a buff and polish process.

How does it work?

There are two basic types of microdermabrasion:

  1. Crystal Microdermabrasion – This is the original form of microdermabrasion. It was first used over in Europe and then came to the United States by the early 1990’s. In this version, crystals (usually made of aluminum oxide) are sprayed over the skin to exfoliate, then the crystals and skin cells are suctioned back through a tube suction system.

Personally, I am less of a fan of this type of microdermabrasion though it is widely used.  It can sting when the crystal hit the skin, making it a less enjoyable experience.  The crystals can be messy and there is potential for crystals ending up in places they should not. For those who are more sensitive, breathing in aluminum oxide can cause temporary breathing difficulties.

  1. Diamond Tome Microdermabrasion – This version utilizes interchangeable diamond-tip wands with varying degrees of abrasiveness to gently exfoliates and loosens the dead cells which are then suctioned away through a sterile vacuumed system. There is no debri or crystals making this system a healthy choice for both the operator and the patient.

If you have never had Microdermabrasion (or skin treatments such as Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing) then it is generally best performed in a series of treatments as each treatment results in more improvement. On average, you can anticipate having about 6 treatments to get your skin back in shape; of course, this depends on the condition of your skin to begin with.  Once your initial series is completed, you may want to consider a microdermabrasion treatment every 4-6 weeks to maintain your results. While microdermabrasion is most often used to treat the face, it can address skin concerns of the neck, chest, hands, arms, legs etc.

At Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we take microdermabrasion a few steps further. We offer “Medical Microdermabrasion,” which is a 5-step process.  We begin by exfoliating the skin with microdermabrasion with a Diamond-tome system as described above but we don’t stop there!  We follow with a glycolic application, an oxygen-nutrient mist, a mini facial massage, and finally an application of premium medical grade skincare products.

What improvements could I expect?

With recurring treatments, you can expect to see diminished appearance of lines, rough texture, and acne scarring.  You can expect a more even skin tone, fewer break-outs, a softer feel, and a radiant glow. Microdermabrasion can also help maximize the benefits of your at-home skincare product routine.

 Am I a good candidate?

Microdermabrasion is safe for all colors of skin.  It is best utilized for those with minimal to moderate lines, rough texture, dull, dry or lifeless skin, sun damage, clogged pores / black-heads, acne-prone skin, mild pigmentation concerns.  Microdermabrasion can also be an alternative solution for those with melasma (condition usually due to hormonal changes that results in brown or grey-brown patches on the skin) that becomes aggravated with other forms of treatment.

Those who have Rosacea and those who have active cold sores should avoid this treatment. Those who have waxed, had a chemical peel or other facials treatments should avoid microdermabrasion in the same area for a few weeks.

How will I look after my treatment?

The good news is there is no down time for this rejuvenating treatment.  Your skin may look slightly flushed 10-30 minutes after your treatment. When more advanced ranges of abrasiveness are used, it can result in cat like scratches that will resolve quickly.  Your skin will look and feel smoother after the first treatment and will continue to improve with each additional treatment. You can apply cosmetics right away.  You can return to work, go out for lunch, or carry out any of your daily activities immediately.

Microdermabrasion or exfoliation of any kind will make you skin more sun sensitive for a few weeks. Be sure to apply quality broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily and reapply as needed.

Ask Our Expert: Are My Brown Spots Sun Damage Or Just Age Spots?

Wednesday, June 5th, 2019

Ask Our Expert: Brown Spots:

Q: Roxanne, I have brown spots on my face, arms and chest.  How do I know if they are caused from sun damage or if they are just age spots?

A: Lentigos, or lentigines are commonly referred to as brown spots, sun spots, liver spots or age spots.  They appear as flat spots in various shades of brown that appear on skin that has been over exposed to the sun. These spots can appear on the face, arms, shoulders, neck, chest, hands; anywhere the skin has been over-exposed to the sun. Typically, the lighter the skin and the more sun exposure one has, the greater accumulation or chance of accumulation of sun spots.

Melanocytes, which are cells that produce pigment in the skin are activated to produce more pigment (melanin) when you are exposed to ultraviolet rays. Because the symptoms of excessive sun damage are cumulative, these spots increase with age, hence the term “age spots.” They are more common in lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick 1-3), such as those who freckle and who burn easily but can appear in any skin type.

I recommend applying a medical-grade, physical sunblock such as Physical Defense by Castillo MD Skin Science, 365 days per year, to all skin that will be exposed.  Not only is this your best defense for future sun damage but  you may find that the brown spots that you have become lighter over time.

There are  treatments that can help to rid your skin of brown spots as well. CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing is typically an excellent option.  A series of Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments can also deliver very good  results.  Some chemical peels  can improve spots to some degree as well as skin bleaching or lightening agents like Advanced Lightening Complex or Spot Light.

While sun spots themselves are not cancerous, if you have had enough lifetime sun exposure to develop brown spots, this may place you at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.  Therefore, it’s a good idea have your physician examine them for changes from time to time.

Warmly,

Roxanne Grace Hammond

Ways To Achieve Remarkable And Beautiful Skin Characteristics

Saturday, May 5th, 2018

While sitting in a small room in a Champaign office recently, I over-heard an elated young lady boasting about the beautiful diamond she received over the holiday. Her gushing excitement was infectious. I found myself feeling almost as excited as she, yet I couldn’t even see the diamond!

I then began to wonder “what it is that makes diamonds or other precious gems for that matter generate that type of admiration.” I would guess most of us regard diamonds as a thing of beauty… but why? What specifically is it that makes girls go gaga over diamonds? Is it the number of carats? Could it be the shape of the stone that is so enchanting?

To me, it is the clarity and color of the stone. I would much prefer a petite diamond with such superior color and clarity that it shimmers and dances in the light, and highlights every curve and contour, to a cloudy, three carat diamond that lacks life and luster. Would you agree? Now, don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely a fan of big rocks. I’m not trying to fool anyone here. Size does matter! It just falls short without superior color and clarity.

So why am I even talking about diamonds in a skincare blog?

Well, the characteristics that make a diamond sparkle and radiate beauty are very similar to the characteristics of beautiful skin. I mean is there anyone out there who would not be flattered to have their skin compared to a radiant, flawless diamond? Just as clarity and color are mandatory characteristics of a beautiful diamond, clarity and color are also key factors in creating beautiful skin.

Achieving superior skin color means that your skin is free of brown spots, freckles, redness, broken vessels and melasma. Skin clarity refers to skin that is free of rough texture, flakes, dull skin, large pores, acne, keratoses and moles. Superior color and clarity can be achieved through treatments such as traditional CO2 Full Face Laser Resurfacing , CO2 Micro-Fractional Laser Resurfacing, IPL, medical grade bleaching agents such as Castillo MD Skin Science  Advanced Skin Lightening Complex or Spot Light, medical microdermabrasion, chemical peels and medical grade skincare products.

I would say that most people who are bothered by facial aging are focused on wrinkles. When they look in the mirror, they see an aging face with a custom set of lines and wrinkles that have formed after years of abuse, mainly by sun exposure, and other factors. However, most often, removing wrinkles is only half the battle. It is the brown spots, broken vessels, rough texture and dull, flaking skin that create a less youthful appearance.

The concept of color and clarity is an important concept to understand. One must realize that if you treat only the lines and wrinkles of an aging face whether it be though a facelift, forehead lift, fat grafting, Botox or dermal filler such as Restylane Lift,  you are likely to find yourself feeling more like cubic zirconium than the real thing.

Here’s to wishing you the kind of admiration only superior color and clarity can generate.

Looking For A Healthy & Irresistible Tan? Consider a Quality Airbrush Tan

Tuesday, July 11th, 2017

Unless you’ve been avoiding television, magazines, newspapers and social media for the last decade, I think it’s safe to say you’ve heard that UV radiation from both sun exposure and tanning beds are known to cause pre-mature skin aging, skin cancer, even death.

Tanning beds are known carcinogens!

The three things that skincare patients will always here from me are:

  1. “If you do nothing else for yourself or for the health and beauty of your skin; wear medical grade, physical sunscreen every single day, 365 days a year, for the rest of your life.
  2. Re-apply your sunscreen often and generously.
  3. Avoid sun exposure whenever possible.”

If you’ve spent anytime in consultation with me at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, then you know I am a proponent for healthy skin. I spend my days helping others turn their sun-damaged skin into a smooth, clear, healthy canvas featuring their natural skin tone, free of pigmentation with a high level of light reflectivity and smooth texture.

Signs of sun damaged skin: brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, dullness, rough texture

UV radiation from both tanning beds and the sun will rob that natural beauty by leaving it’s unflattering signature behind in the form of unwanted pigmentation or brown spots, lines, wrinkles, sagging, broken vessels, facial redness, rough texture and sometimes cancerous skin lesions. These signs may not show up right away but if you are not protecting your skin, they will catch you off guard at some point, no matter your skin type.

Through the use of Castillo MD Skin Science skincare products, sun protection and in-office skin rejuvenation treatments, our patients are seeing for themselves that well cared-for, clear, even toned, smooth, radiant skin can be more beautiful than tanned skin and is worth protecting!

If you are one of those people who think tanned skin is more attractive than natural-toned skin, a spray tan is a way to accomplish that look without putting your skin’s health at risk. Many past sun worshipers are now searching for alternative ways to appear sun-kissed when they have a special event coming up. They frequently ask for recommendations for self-tanners or spray tans for upcoming weddings, vacations, and class reunions.

I decided to investigate to options of self-tanners on the market and spray tans available in our area. Truthfully, once I researched the self-tanners for at home use, I couldn’t bring myself to try them. It seemed WAY too complicated with lots of opportunity for error considering my inexperience! I didn’t want to risk being blotchy or streaked, or umpa-lumpa orange.

That left spray tan booths and airbrushed spray tans to consider. In recalling my single experience with a spray tan booth about 15 years ago, I was reminded why I never opted for another spray tan. I was in a spray booth, cold, naked and alone without professional direction. It is impossible to hold your breath the whole time, so breathing in some of the solution is unavoidable, unless maybe you’re a fish. As I gasped for a quick breath, I got a mouth full of spray tan solution! Not good! My “tan” was blotchy in areas, which may have been a result of improper exfoliation in certain areas were my skin was drier (between fingers, ankles, the underside of my writs) but also on my lower legs which was not expected :-(. So… I ruled out volunteering for a duplicate of that experience, even though I realize it’s quite possible booths have improved over the years.

Airbrush tan it is then! I spoke in depth with Kristen, the owned of Body Bronze in Champaign. I decided to try a professional airbrush spray tan instead. I liked that the spray is controlled by a technician, similar to being spray-painted. They can give you direction along the way, “turn this way, hold your breath, breath now…” which put my worries to ease. I did not ingest any mist.

The rooms were equipped with ventilation systems to remove the mist immediately. Kristen explained that their FDA-approved solutions are all gluten-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic and come in different shades to meet the needs of each individual. Together we determined that the sun-kissed to light, quick dry application would best meet my goals.

It was a quick, easy, process, a little chilly. I was given a specific time to shower (which you will definitely want to factor in before making your appointment!) and away I went. I felt a little sticky afterwards and was alarmed (though Kristen warned me) by how dark I appeared as the solution was setting. She assured me that when I showered, the dark color would rinse off and it did. By morning, I had a nice, even sun-kissed glow just in time to catch my plane for Hawaii.

I was concerned about whether or not the tan would fade evenly as I would be on vacation for 10 days. Kristen recommended I take a small bottle of Body Blendz Touch-Up spray with me just in case. My tan faded quite evenly so I did not need to use it. However, it’s nice to know there is a touch-up spray available.

While I remain a firm believer that well cared for, protected, original skin tones (color) are most beautiful, it was fun to change things up and experience a sun-kissed glow for a few days.

Stay tuned to my blog as I will share the lessons I have learned during my adventure with spray tanning and discuss the things you should know before your next fake bake.

Sincerely,

New Exclusive & Informative Interview with Skin & Laser Specialist, Roxanne – Question #3

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

Question: Why do people come to the skin rejuvenation suite at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery?

Roxanne: “Most men and women, even teens simply want to become a better version of themselves.

  • They may have a special occasion coming up like a wedding, vacation or new job.
  • Some are seeking one of our signature facials or microdermabrasion to relief stress and brighten their appearance while others are working on self-improvement with chemical peels, hair reduction or vein therapy.“
  • In January of this year, to support the services that the skin rejuvenation suite offers, Dr. Castillo introduced his own medical-grade skincare line called Castillo MD Skin Science.  It has been very well received by our patients and our staff.
  • The new skincare line has been a huge success and the results speak for themselves! This has brought a new sector of patients to us who are simply tired of being disappointed by empty promises made by over-the-counter skincare product lines. Trial sizes are available for most of the products so patients can try them out before purchasing a full size product. It is a nice benefit for the patient and they come back so excited, bursting with compliments about the skincare products they tried. As I always say, “you don’t need a cabinet full of skincare products, just the right products and knowledge to know the difference!”Microdermabrasion ScrubIMG_2054
